The critical edition of Johann Ludwig Schönleben’s play Haeresis fulminata (Lightning Strikes the Heretic)
Monika Deželak Trojar, Research Associate at the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies, Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Brane Senegačnik, Associate Member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Associate Professor at the Department of Classical Philology, University of Ljubljana, have published the critical edition of Johann Ludwig Schönleben’s play Haeresis fulminata (Lightning Strikes the Heretic). This is the fourth volume of Dela starejšega slovenskega slovstva (Writings of Older Slovenian Literature), a book series that accompanies Zbrana dela slovenskih pesnikov in pisateljev (Collected Writings of Slovenian Poets and Writers) at the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies. The play Haeresis fulminata was written and performed at the former Jesuit College in Ljubljana in 1651. It has only survived in manuscript form in the Auersperg family archive in Vienna. This critical edition offers a transcription of the Latin text of the play and its translation into Slovenian as well as an extensive scholarly apparatus. The edition marks the first attempt to reconstruct a fragment of the rich theatre history of the former province of Carniola and its capital Ljubljana as it was characterised by the Jesuits and their theatre performances.
