Marijan Dović and Jón Karl Helgason: National Poets, Cultural Saints
Published on: February 24, 2017Marijan Dović and Jón Karl Helgason have written the book National Poets, Cultural Saints, which has just appeared with Brill. The book uses the concepts of cultural saints to discuss writers and artists who were celebrated by nineteenth-century national movements in ways analogous to the veneration of Christian saints. A theory of cultural saints is developed on the basis of case studies of Jónas Hallgrímsson and France Prešeren, the central cultural saints of the national movements in Iceland and Slovenian lands respectively.
