Sergej Valijev’s research interests include ancient tragedy, philosophy in late antiquity, Christian philosophy and theology (both Eastern and Western), medieval and baroque literature of Slovenian lands, the reception of ancient tragedy in Slovenian literature, phenomenology and existentialism.

Sergej Valijev was born in 1994 in Ljubljana. After finishing the Diocesan Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana, he enrolled in the Munich School of Philosophy, where he received his BA in 2017. In 2020, he defended his MA thesis on The Theme of Tragic Knowledge and the Motive of Heracles’ Death in Trachiniae and Hercules on Oeta at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. In 2021, he enrolled in the PhD program in Literary Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana under the supervision of Brane Senegačnik. In 2022, he became a Research Assistant at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts under the supervision of Monika Deželak Trojar.
